shorter story

In the story we recently read, it started out with children gathering rocks and put them into a pile. The author then continued to tell us about Mr. Summers and the black box, how every year someone takes home the black box and watches over it. Also, the author tells us that this is not the first box, but in fact there has been many boxes before, which implies that this is a long going tradition. Later on in the story we meet Mrs. Hutchinson, who shows up late to what they call "the lottery". By the author making Mrs. Hutchinson show up late and making her a more developed character, the author is giving us a hint that something is going to happen to her. Next, Mr. Summers begins the lottery by calling up the man of the household for each family, which one of the characters' husband couldn't make it so she had to draw for him. Later in the story they reach the Hutchinson family and it turns out that Mr. Hutchinson draws the paper with the black dot. After Mr. Hutchinson draws the black dot, the whole family goes up onto what I believe is a stage or platform. And each member of the family, even the baby; has to draw another paper to see who wins the "lottery". It turns out that wife Tessie draws the paper with the black dot, which apparently means you win. In the end, her prize was unfortunately getting stoned to death.
