The story that we read was about a village that had an annual lottery. The story begins by telling us that the villagers start to gather in the town square between the post office and the bank. It also says that there are some villages where there are so many people that they have to start the lottery two days early. In their village it only takes about two hours to complete the entire process. The kids gathrered first and were busy talking about the recent events that happened since school was recently over. A few of the boys started to gather up some of the smoothest, roundest rocks in the area.
The rest of the families slowly started to get together and talk about random things that villagers talk about. The story then tells us that all the social events of the village are conducted by a dude named Mr. Summers, a happy man who ran the coal factory, had no children, and whos wife was a scolder. For this event Mr. Summers had a small wooden box with lots of slips of paper in it. The story then goes on to tell us that the current box might have been made with pieces of the old box. It tells us about all the junk that Mr. Summers and some other people from the village.
It then introduces us to Mrs. Hutchinson who shows up late because she forgot what day it was. She finds her family and makes her way over to them through the crowd. The story then goes on about the different people who need to fill in for family members because they are injured, sick, or dead. Then Mr. Summers starts to rattle off the names of the people in the village, and they come up to the box to retrieve a piece of paper. After everybody has gotten their paper they unfold them, and we find out that Mr. Hutchinson is the winner. At this point Mrs. Hutchinson goes into hysterics saying that her husband was rushed into picking the slip of paper he had picked.
Then the Hutchinson family is brought into the center of the square, and a few more papers are put into the box. After the papers are put into the box every member of the Hutchinson family takes out a new piece of paper. Once every Hutchinson had taken out a new slip they each take a turn to unfold their slip. The Hutchinson kids open their slips, and they are all blank. Mrs. Hutchinson doesn't want to open her slip when it's her turn, so Mr. Hutchinson opens his which turns out to be blank. This means that Mrs. Hutchinson has won the lottery.
All the villagers start to pick up rocks from the pile, and close in on Mrs. Hutchinson. She starts to scream about how the lottery isn't fair. A rock hits her head. The next thing we know they start to stone her to death. Turns out that the prize for the lottery is death by stoning.
