In “The Lottery” the author started off telling us about a character called Tessie Hutchinson. Tessie Hutchinson was very friendly and social. She arrived late to the annual Lottery celebration her community participates in. Everyone was already there getting ready for the event and preparing the lottery papers. Then everyone was ready, and started to pick their papers. Everyone, even the children, had to wait until each person had their paper, before opening theirs. After each person had their paper, it came time to open them. Everyone opened their paper hoping not to receive the black dot. Everyone expected Bill Hutchinson, Tessie’s husband, to receive the black dot. But to everyone’s surprise Tessie Hutchinson received the black dot. This meant she was the lottery winner.
When you think about winning you think about thing good, like receiving a prize. But this was not the case; Tessie Hutchinson’s prize was going to be to be stoned to death. This meant the Hutchinson family was going to lose a wife and a mother. This didn’t stop the community though; they still continued with their tradition and started to throw the stones. Tessie yelled “it isn’t fair” but that didn’t stop them, they continued to hurt her, until they killed her.
Not all traditions are good, some are hurtful. We shouldn’t just do things because the people before us have done so. We need to always question whether are actions can hurt someone else. And if we know that it will don’t do it just because you are told its okay.
