The poster
The Big Brother poster is a symbol in the book 1984. The party hangs this poster all over the town. By doing this they are showing that the party is all over the town just like the posters. The posters say big brother is watching you. When some one sees this poster it will make them think to themselves. It might make them think that this poster could be right. They might be feeling they are being watched over as the very second they are reading this poster. This poster is a more of a direct symbol. It is telling you exactly what it means. Another symbol in the book is Winston"s dairy. This was a symbol of his real thoughts and ideas. In Winston's life he could not express himself as he would like to. In this dairy it was something he had control over. I think his dairy represented the one thing he had control over in his life. The party in some ways controlled Winston but with this dairy he got some of that control back. I think it also was a symbol of sanity. It showed that a person must express them self because if that dont they will either turn into a different person. This dairy was also a symbol of how bad and strict the laws were in the party. If it was breaking the law to be able to write down your thoughts then does that mean the party is scared of what people think. Are they trying to stop people from seeing what the party is really about? If people had a mind of their own and they were aloud to express themselves would every one still be in the party?
