"As he put his hand to the door-knob Winston saw that he had left the diary opened on the table. Down with Big Bother was written all over it." This passage comes from the novel "1984" and is a great example of Symbolism. Even though you might not of noticed the symbolism the first time you read this passage, dose not mean its not there to be found. If you take a close look you can actually find to different uses of symbolism. The first use of symbolism was the diary which sat open on the table. The diary is a symbol of Winston's freedom the one place in the book where he is free to think how he would like and not the way he was forced to think. Another use of symbolism is simply the words "Down with Big Bother" that was written all over the diary. The phrase Down with Big Bother was a symbol for the way Winston really felt about Big Bother and the party. Winston most have felt very strongly anaginst the party, or Big Bother, not only to write the phrase "Down with Big Bother" in his diary, but just to have a diary in the first place knowing the trouble it can cause for him.
